For anyone who likes the best of the old in Newcastle it is indeed cheering to see the name Isaac Walton & Co brightly showing in cherry and red. It has been one of Newcastles better known trade names since 1887. Over the years it has occupied three different sites in Grainger Street. In its heyday it was a major part of the block leading into Grainger Market, and it was the outfitter to serve a man from school to last day at work, such was the importance to schoolwear as well as to bespoke styling. Latterly it had stood almost opposite Mark Toney. Since the big store closed, the business has operated as a purely bespoke tailor, though it does carry a wide range of caps, hats and ties - the latter especially of the regimental and college variety. The hats have become an important part of the business, especially since Bell's in nearby Claydon Street closed. And, believe it or not, you can buy starched collars in Isaac Walton. |
